We celebrated our third Burns’ night at The Gallery on Saturday the 28th of January. Once again we donned our tartan finery, sashes, kilts and furry sporrans (Simon’s still squeaks), and Antonia found her tartan tights!
After reciting “The Selkirk Grace” we dined on Cock A Leekie Soup and feasted on “The Chieftain O’ the puddin’ race” the Haggis of course, with neeps and tatties (we ran out of neeps, apologies were made and the neep police were notified), washed it down with a wee dram followed by a dessert of “Whisky Laird”.
The Haggis was piped in by bagpiper Mike Sugg, and was no doubt heard by most of Holyrood Street, if not Chard and provided a tremendous, bone shaking start to the evening.
Hairs on the back of our necks stood on end when Terry Henery delivered his address, wielding his Sgian Dubh (wee dagger) stabbing at the “Beastie”.
Glasses were raised to the lassies and laddies in the traditional fashion and “The Ode to a Fart” (please click to view) was recited beautifully bringing a tear to the eye.
Much fun was had by all and fortunately for everybody concerned, all kilts remained un-lifted.
